Port Arthur City Council convened on June 4, 2025, to discuss significant developments impacting the community, including a public hearing on a drilling permit and a resolution for funding public works.
The council opened with a public hearing regarding a permit request from Geoteer Operating LLC to drill an oil and gas well in the 6700 block of South State Highway 87, also known as South Gulfway Drive in Sabine Pass. The Texas Railroad Commission had already approved the permit on April 17, 2025. The proposed well will reach a depth of 8,500 feet and is located on an 80-acre tract of land, approximately one mile southwest of Sabine Pass. City staff confirmed that the site meets all zoning requirements and is free from nearby residential or commercial structures, ensuring compliance with safety regulations. The council will vote on the resolution to authorize the drilling permit at their next meeting on June 17.
In addition to the drilling permit, the council discussed a resolution to issue combination tax and revenue certificates of obligation not exceeding $18 million. This funding aims to support the construction of public works and fulfill contractual obligations for professional services. The resolution was moved for approval by Councilwoman Becker and seconded by Councilwoman Hamilton, indicating strong support for advancing infrastructure projects in the city.
These discussions highlight the council's commitment to balancing economic development through energy initiatives while addressing the community's infrastructure needs. The upcoming vote on the drilling permit and the funding resolution will be pivotal in shaping Port Arthur's future growth and development.
