David Raycroft proposes Portland's Geek Week PDX for September 14

In a vibrant display of community spirit and creativity, the Portland City Council convened on June 4, 2025, to discuss the upcoming Geek Week PDX, a celebration of nerd culture that promises to engage residents and visitors alike. David Raycroft, the chief goblin wrangler of Geek Week PDX, presented a compelling case for officially designating September 14 as Geek Week in Portland, highlighting the event's potential to boost local businesses and foster community connections.

Raycroft recounted the origins of Geek Week, which began in 2024 as a grassroots initiative aimed at showcasing the diverse and quirky aspects of Portland's culture. Last year, the event successfully cataloged over 400 unique experiences across 50 small businesses, drawing participation from every district in the city. This year, Geek Week PDX is set to expand significantly, transforming Director's Park into an "imagination station" with five days of programming, culminating in a grand finale fantasy fair during the popular Sunday Parkways event.

The festivities will kick off with an intergalactic prom at the Jupiter Hotel, inviting attendees to embrace their inner nerd with themed attire. Over 300 small businesses will participate, offering a wide range of activities that reflect the multifaceted nature of geek culture, from food and history to gaming and disc golf.

Raycroft emphasized the importance of recognizing and celebrating nerd culture, noting that the term "geek" has evolved into a badge of honor for millions across the United States. With approximately 240 million self-identified geeks in the country, he urged the council to embrace this demographic and promote Portland as a destination for those seeking unique and engaging experiences.
