Lyon County School District officials are exploring the expansion of Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs to better align with the high-demand industries in the region. During the recent LCSD Board Meeting on April 22, 2025, discussions highlighted the need for additional pathways, particularly in manufacturing, which is currently underrepresented in the district's offerings.
Superintendent President Hendricks acknowledged the challenges of staffing these programs, noting that the ability to launch new CTE pathways is heavily dependent on hiring qualified teachers. Despite these hurdles, there is a clear interest in enhancing the district's educational landscape with more options in information technology, construction technology, welding, and agricultural mechanics.
The district is already making strides in health sciences and has established strong programs in Smith, Yerington, and Fernley. Notably, the agricultural program at Fernley High School is actively engaging students with hands-on experiences, including cattle management and land irrigation projects.
As the district continues to assess its CTE offerings, the focus remains on meeting community needs and preparing students for careers in growing sectors. The next steps will involve addressing staffing challenges while seeking to broaden the educational pathways available to students in Lyon County.
