Lyon County School District (LCSD) has taken a significant step towards enhancing student safety and transportation efficiency by approving a comprehensive upgrade to its school bus camera and student tracking systems during the board meeting on April 22, 2025. The board unanimously voted to implement the Traversa system from Tyler Technologies, which promises to streamline operations and improve communication for parents and school administrators alike.
The new system will replace the outdated Trekker program, which has been criticized for its lack of functionality and reliability. The Traversa system will provide real-time tracking of students as they board and disembark from buses, allowing parents to monitor their children's transportation status through an active app. This upgrade is expected to address long-standing issues with bus tracking and enhance overall safety, as it includes features such as automated routing and fleet management tools.
Trustee Farber highlighted the urgent need for this upgrade, citing feedback from administrators and bus drivers who have expressed concerns about the current system's inefficiencies. The new technology is anticipated to save the district money in the long run, with projected annual savings of over $17,000 compared to the current patchwork of systems.
In addition to the student tracking system, the board also approved the installation of stop-arm cameras on school buses, aimed at deterring reckless driving and enhancing student safety during pick-up and drop-off times. Trustee Whistler emphasized the importance of these cameras, noting their potential to prevent accidents and reduce liability costs for the district.
The board's decision reflects a commitment to improving student safety and operational consistency across the district. With the implementation of these systems, LCSD aims to provide a more reliable and secure transportation experience for students and peace of mind for their families. The next steps will involve the integration of the new technology and training for staff to ensure a smooth transition.
