Jonesboro's Public Works Council Committee has approved a crucial project aimed at enhancing rail safety and infrastructure during their recent meeting on June 3, 2025. The initiative focuses on addressing recurring issues with rail switches and roadway crossings that have posed safety risks and incurred significant repair costs.

The committee highlighted that the frequent breakdown of rail switches has become an urgent concern, with each repair costing between $6,000 and $6,500. To mitigate these emergencies, the new project will implement protective measures designed to prevent damage to the switches, ensuring smoother operations for railcar movements.

In addition to the switch repairs, the project will also involve the replacement of deteriorating concrete panels at roadway crossings.
