Moscow Mountain Powell Project adds new trails through community effort

Moscow City Council members received an exciting update on the Moscow Mountain Powell Project Trail build during their meeting on June 2, 2025. David Schott introduced Chris Chambers, president of Mamba Trails, a volunteer organization dedicated to enhancing outdoor recreational spaces in the area. Chambers highlighted the collaborative effort between the city and local community members to develop approximately 20 acres of trails on Moscow Mountain, a project that has been in the works since its approval in January 2023.

The Powell Project aims to connect new trails with the existing Moscow Mountain Trail Network, providing residents and visitors with improved access to outdoor activities. Chambers noted that over 400 volunteer hours have been dedicated to the project, resulting in more than two miles of new trails ready for public use. This initiative not only promotes physical health but also contributes to the local economy by attracting outdoor enthusiasts to the area.

Chambers emphasized the importance of community involvement, mentioning contributions from various local organizations, including the University of Idaho and Washington State University. The project has fostered a sense of unity among participants, showcasing the collaborative spirit of Moscow residents.

As the trails near completion, the community is invited to explore the new routes, which feature unique names reflecting their characteristics, such as "Needle Drop," a steep section of the mountain. The project exemplifies the city's commitment to enhancing recreational opportunities and underscores the value of outdoor spaces for both health and economic benefits.
