Ellensburg City Council has taken a significant step towards enhancing community engagement by approving the recognition of eight federal holidays on the city’s social media platforms. During the June 2, 2025, meeting, council members unanimously supported a motion to publicly acknowledge holidays including New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. This decision aims to foster a sense of unity and pride among residents, as articulated by council members who emphasized the importance of recognizing these holidays as part of American heritage.
The initiative arose from a previous oversight regarding Presidents' Day, which highlighted the need for a more inclusive approach to holiday recognition. Council members expressed their commitment to ensuring that all federal holidays receive the acknowledgment they deserve, reinforcing the city’s dedication to community values and participation.
In addition to holiday recognition, the council discussed the implementation of a comprehensive community calendar aimed at improving event visibility and participation. Proposed by Kelly Vandenberg, the arts and economic development manager, the calendar will be developed in partnership with a company called Wythe, which specializes in aggregating community events. This innovative approach is expected to streamline information access for residents, making it easier to discover local activities and events.
The council is set to allocate up to $12,000 from lodging tax funds for this project, which will position Ellensburg as the first city in Washington state to utilize this specific program. The community calendar is anticipated to enhance local engagement, boost attendance at events, and ultimately support economic development by keeping dollars within the community.
Both initiatives reflect the city council's proactive approach to fostering community spirit and improving access to information, setting the stage for a more connected and informed Ellensburg. As these projects move forward, residents can look forward to a more vibrant community life and a deeper appreciation for the shared values that bind them together.
