Wildfire prevention took center stage at the June 2 City Council meeting in Ellensburg, as Karen Vandergrind from Puget Sound Energy (PSE) provided a crucial update on the utility's efforts to mitigate fire risks in the region. Vandergrind highlighted the proactive measures being implemented, particularly in the wake of a challenging spring season.

PSE has been diligently inspecting both transmission and distribution lines, focusing on vegetation management to reduce fire hazards. Vandergrind noted that this work is nearing completion, with a commitment to ensuring safety in the area surrounding Aspland.

A key innovation in PSE's strategy is the introduction of Pano AI cameras—advanced smoke-detecting technology that enhances early warning capabilities. Vandergrind announced that six of these cameras have been installed in Kittitas County, with data being shared with the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and local fire districts to bolster community safety.
