The Ellensburg City Council is set to enhance its holiday recognition policy by adding eight federal holidays to its social media calendar. During the meeting on June 2, 2025, Public Information Officer Nicole Klaus presented the proposal, which aims to formally recognize all 11 federal holidays. Currently, only three are acknowledged, and the update seeks to include the remaining eight.
This initiative follows a recommendation from the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Commission, which previously outlined a list of proclamations and recognition days in August 2023. Klaus explained that commission members will draft social media posts for these holidays, which will then be reviewed and published by city staff, ensuring a consistent approach to public recognition.
Community member Candace Comfort voiced her support for the proposal, emphasizing the importance of recognizing federal holidays not just as days off, but as commemorations of significant events and traditions in American history. The council's decision to move forward with this update reflects a commitment to inclusivity and recognition of shared national values.
As the city prepares to implement this policy, residents can look forward to a more comprehensive acknowledgment of federal holidays on Ellensburg's social media platforms, fostering a greater sense of community and connection to the nation’s history.
