Skagit County officials are making significant strides toward the development of a new event venue, a project that promises to address a critical need in the community while boosting local employment. During a recent government meeting, discussions highlighted the collaborative efforts between the city and the port, which have been ongoing since late 2023.
The proposed venue aims to accommodate around 400 guests and is expected to create approximately 75 jobs by its fourth year of operation. This initiative not only seeks to fill the current gap in event space but also aims to support various sectors, including construction, catering, and tourism—an industry vital to the economic health of Anacortes and the broader Skagit Valley.
Key interlocal agreements are set to be approved soon, which will clarify the responsibilities of each party involved in the construction and operation of the venue. The city is providing funding, while the port is contributing the land necessary for the project. The planning phase is anticipated to conclude by October, followed by design and engineering work, with construction expected to begin in April 2026.
Officials have earmarked approximately $1.5 million from the lodging tax fund to kickstart the project, with additional funding needed to cover the total estimated cost of $9 to $12 million. This funding will also help sustain local events, creating a beneficial cycle that enhances community engagement and economic activity.
Concerns regarding permitting, especially due to the venue's proximity to water, were addressed, with assurances that necessary shoreline permits are being considered as part of the planning process.
