Grand Prairie is gearing up for a vibrant celebration of Juneteenth, as Mayor Ron Jensen highlights a series of community events in his June 2025 message. The festivities will kick off with a Juneteenth block party at Epic Central on June 7, followed by a parade on June 14 and a special celebration at Tyre Park. Notably, Ms. Opal Lee, recognized as the "grandmother of Juneteenth," will be a key figure in these events, sharing her insights and inviting residents to participate.
In addition to the Juneteenth celebrations, the city is restoring its iconic Liberty Bell, a symbol of unity for the past 50 years. The bell will be relocated a short distance from its original site on the City Hall campus, receiving a complete restoration and a new shade structure for its display.
As summer approaches, Grand Prairie residents can look forward to a variety of outdoor activities. The summer concert series begins on June 12 at Lamb Creek Park, while family-friendly movie nights will start on June 20 at Lloyd Park. The GP Nature Club will also launch on June 28, promoting environmental appreciation among participants.
On the utility front, the city will introduce a new water utilities customer portal on June 16, streamlining account management for residents. This portal will allow users to view bills, make payments, and stay informed about their water services.
Mayor Jensen also encourages community engagement through health and fitness events, including a 5K and health fair at the Farmer's Market on June 7, and a cycling event on June 19 at Action Skate Park.
Lastly, the Grand Prairie Libraries are promoting a summer reading club, offering prizes for reading achievements to encourage literacy among children, teens, and adults.
These initiatives reflect Grand Prairie's commitment to community engagement, cultural celebration, and enhancing the quality of life for its residents. For more details on events and programs, residents can visit the city's website at gptx.org.
