Katrina Coleman, chair of the City of Trotwood's Compensation Board, presented a revised salary proposal to the city council during the June 2 meeting, addressing concerns raised in previous discussions. The board reconvened on May 7 to reassess the mayor's salary and council members' compensation based on feedback from the April 28 council meeting.
The revised recommendation proposes an annual base salary of $18,000 for the mayor, up from the original $15,000, while eliminating the optional annual per diem of $6,000. This adjustment aims to avoid the perception of a pay cut and aligns with the total possible annual compensation allowed under current statutes. Coleman emphasized that the mayor's salary would continue to be double that of council members, who are now recommended to receive $9,000 annually.
Additionally, the board discussed the implementation of staggered effective dates for any approved salary increases, acknowledging that state law prohibits interim pay raises. This means any changes would take effect only at the start of the new term, ensuring all elected officials receive equal pay for the same duration, albeit not in the same years.
Coleman concluded her presentation by highlighting the importance of clarity and compliance to avoid any potential issues, referencing past audits that raised concerns. The council's decision on these recommendations will shape the compensation structure for Trotwood's elected officials moving forward.
