During a recent meeting of the Worcester City Standing Committee on Municipal & Legislative Operations, discussions centered on potential cost-saving measures for a construction project involving the installation of double doors. The committee explored the possibility of saving approximately $100,000 in estimated construction costs by opting for double doors instead of a revolving door. However, concerns were raised regarding the need for geotechnical work to address sidewalk heaving, which could impact the functionality of the new doors.

The architect emphasized that even without the revolving door, repairs to the sidewalk are essential. An estimate of $50,450 was provided for the necessary geotechnical work, which is planned to be executed in three phases. The initial phase involves testing to determine the extent of the sidewalk issues. Depending on the results, the project may require further excavation, potentially costing between $20,000 to $30,000.

Additionally, the committee discussed the need for electrical power to be run outside for future lighting designs. However, it was clarified that this aspect was not included in the current project scope, as the decision to incorporate power for the revolving doors had not been finalized.

The discussions highlighted the importance of addressing infrastructure concerns while balancing budgetary constraints. As the project progresses, the committee will need to revisit the electrical requirements and ensure that all necessary repairs are completed to maintain safety and functionality.
