Tampa Commission highlights Juneteenth Homestead during Preservation Month meeting

The Barrio Latino Commission meeting on May 27, 2025, focused on several key topics, including the introduction of the May edition of the Tampa Bricks and Mortar newsletter and the upcoming election of officers.

During the meeting, it was noted that May is Preservation Month, and the newsletter will highlight a local landmark property. The commission also reviewed staff approvals from April 2025, which will be formally accepted by motion at the end of the hearing.

Ron Veil, a planner with the historic preservation team, presented this month's "Preservation in Progress" segment, focusing on the Juneteenth Homestead and Farm located at 2401 East Eleventh Avenue in Ybor City. Veil provided background on the property and its significance, noting that the historic district boundaries had been expanded to include this landmark.

The meeting concluded with plans for the election of officers, with nominations to be made by the chair. This process aims to ensure continued leadership and direction for the commission's efforts in preserving Tampa's cultural heritage.
