The Town of Stratford's Parks and Recreation Department is gearing up for an exciting winter season, with a record number of youth basketball teams set to kick off this week. This year marks the first time six younger girls' teams will participate, necessitating a schedule spread over multiple days, a shift from previous years when games were held in a single day. Additionally, Stratford will collaborate with Milford, traveling three times a month to support their two teams.
The department is also launching a variety of new programs, including kindergarten and preschool basketball, soccer, track, theater, art, and an introductory pickleball program for kids. While initial sign-ups for pickleball have been slow, the department remains optimistic about future participation.
Adult programming continues to thrive, featuring two yoga classes, daytime pickleball, and evening open play pickleball on Fridays. Aquatic workouts are scheduled for Mondays and Wednesdays, and winter swim lessons are currently underway, with plans to start the next session on February 15.
In preparation for summer, the department is working to finalize its camp schedule earlier than last year, responding to community requests for advance planning. While registration will not open until after other local programs, families will have access to the planned weeks ahead of time.
The department has also successfully recertified 15 lifeguards during a recent training session, ensuring a well-prepared staff for the upcoming summer season. With all gym facilities booked for winter activities, the Parks and Recreation team is focused on maintaining high participation rates and enhancing community engagement through robust social media outreach.
As the department looks ahead, it remains committed to providing diverse recreational opportunities for all ages, fostering a vibrant community spirit in Stratford.
