Wilmington Police expand community outreach and mental health support programs

The Wilmington City Council meeting on April 23, 2025, highlighted significant initiatives aimed at enhancing community support and public safety as part of the Fiscal Year 2026 budget discussions. Chief of Police provided an overview of ongoing programs designed to engage residents and address public safety concerns.

A key focus of the meeting was the expansion of community engagement efforts. The police department has been actively organizing monthly resource fairs, collaborating with over 45 social service agencies and health partners to provide essential resources to residents. Additionally, weekly community outreach walks are being conducted with health service providers to foster connections and support.

The Chief also discussed the successful launch of the Partners in Care Co-Responder Program, which pairs mental health clinicians with police officers to respond to calls involving mental health or substance abuse issues. This initiative has already assisted more than 400 individuals in Wilmington, demonstrating a commitment to addressing complex social issues through collaborative efforts.

Furthermore, the department is currently accepting applications for its summer youth public safety program and the 105th Wilmington Police Academy, encouraging community members to consider careers in law enforcement. The Chief emphasized the importance of community involvement in recruiting future officers.
