The Committee on Health, Hospitals and Human Services of the Virgin Islands Legislature convened on May 27, 2025, to address several pressing issues related to health services and workforce development. The meeting featured discussions on the recruitment of social workers and the inspection frequency of restaurants across the territory.
Commissioner Avril George initiated the conversation by highlighting the ongoing efforts to fill social worker positions within the Department of Human Services. She noted that the department has been continuously posting job openings on its website and actively reviewing applications. Despite these efforts, the recruitment process remains challenging. Senator Giddens inquired about recent graduates from the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI), to which Commissioner George estimated that approximately four to six individuals graduated recently. She mentioned that some of these graduates had previously interned with the department but had not yet obtained the necessary licenses to qualify for social worker roles. The committee emphasized the importance of reaching out to all graduates to explore their interest in available positions.
The discussion then shifted to the Department of Health's restaurant inspection protocols. Director Harris confirmed that restaurants are inspected twice a year, depending on the risk level of the establishment. Senator Giddens sought clarification on whether all licensed restaurants, including beach bars, are required to have restroom facilities. Director Harris affirmed that this requirement applies throughout the territory, ensuring that all licensed establishments maintain proper sanitation standards.
The meeting concluded with a focus on the need for proactive recruitment strategies for social workers and the importance of maintaining health and safety standards in food service establishments. The committee plans to follow up on these discussions in future sessions to ensure progress in both areas.
