Boyle County Homeless Coalition unveils NewGround housing initiative for homeless families

The Boyle County Fiscal Court held a significant meeting on May 27, 2025, focusing on the establishment of the Boyle County Homeless Coalition and its new initiative, NewGround. The coalition, formed as a 501(c)(3) organization, aims to address homelessness in the community through partnerships, advocacy, and education.

Dr. Jen Gonder, a member of the coalition, introduced the board of directors and outlined the coalition's mission to reduce and prevent homelessness. The coalition has prioritized three main areas: basic needs, case management, and sheltering options. These efforts include coordinating emergency food supplies, hygiene collections, and developing individual case management plans for those in need.

The highlight of the meeting was the presentation of the NewGround initiative by Michelle Marble from the Family Services Association. NewGround aims to create a supportive residential community for individuals and small families experiencing homelessness. The initiative will provide secure living environments for those actively seeking employment or working towards self-sustainability. The proposed location for NewGround is at the Cook Family Services Association property on South Bloom Street, which is strategically chosen to reduce transportation barriers and improve access to essential services.

Marble detailed the phased approach for NewGround, starting with units for single parents and later expanding to accommodate individuals without children. The coalition is also seeking a zoning change to facilitate this initiative, aligning with the future land use map.
