The City Commission of Dunedin is taking significant steps to address community concerns surrounding the popular sport of pickleball. During a recent meeting, officials discussed ongoing efforts to improve communication with residents, particularly those living near pickleball courts, and to mitigate noise and lighting issues.

City representatives reached out to the Heather Lakes Condo Association, aiming to keep residents informed about developments. Although the association's president indicated that previous concerns had been heard, the city is committed to maintaining open lines of communication. "We are working toward purchasing and communicating," a city official stated, emphasizing a comprehensive approach to planning rather than piecemeal solutions.

Key measures discussed include limiting court hours and installing light shields to reduce illumination impact on nearby homes. Four shields have already been ordered for the lights closest to Heather Lakes, with plans to monitor their effectiveness and make adjustments as needed. The city is also exploring landscaping options to buffer sound and enhance privacy for residents.

In addition to these measures, the city is implementing a directed patrol by local police to ensure compliance with noise regulations and to foster a respectful environment for both pickleball players and nearby residents. Signage reminding players to keep noise levels down is also in the works.

The commission is actively working to balance the growing popularity of pickleball with the needs of the surrounding community. "It's the most popular sport right now," officials noted, highlighting the importance of finding solutions that allow for continued play while respecting residential peace.
