Dunedin's Highland Games have once again proven to be a significant community event, drawing approximately 21,000 attendees over two days, despite a slight decrease from last year due to extreme heat. Eric McNeil, president of the Dunedin Scottish Arts Foundation, presented an update on the event during the City Commission meeting on May 22, 2025, highlighting the collaborative efforts that made the festival a success.

The Highland Games, held at Highlander Park, showcased the hard work of 465 volunteers, including local students and community organizations. McNeil expressed gratitude to the city’s Parks and Recreation Department for their support in preparing the venue, emphasizing the teamwork that brought the event to life.

In terms of economic impact, the Highland Games generated an impressive $10 million for the local economy. This success is attributed to a robust marketing strategy, with the Dunedin Scottish Arts Foundation investing around $92,000 in promotional efforts, primarily targeting audiences outside of Pinellas County. The foundation's commitment to local businesses was evident, as they collaborated with over 50 regional vendors to facilitate the event.

While attendance was slightly lower than previous years, McNeil noted that the festival remains a vital part of Dunedin's cultural landscape, fostering community spirit and attracting visitors to the area. The Highland Games not only celebrate Scottish heritage but also contribute significantly to the local economy, reinforcing the importance of such events in Dunedin's community calendar.
