The City of Middleton is taking significant steps towards sustainability, as highlighted in the recent Common Council meeting. The sustainability coordinator shared exciting announcements that aim to engage the community in eco-friendly initiatives.
One of the key highlights is the upcoming event on June 6, hosted by the Sustainable Leadership Collaborative at the Oregon Library. This event, designed for elected officials in Dane County, will showcase the library's new geothermal and solar features, emphasizing the importance of sustainable building practices.
In a move to enhance waste management, a scrap food composting kiosk will be installed at the Torrey parking lot near the skate park. This program, launching on June 1, will be free for all Middleton residents, allowing them to compost food scraps conveniently. The launch event will also feature a hands-on interactive trash lab for families and a community bike ride, promoting sustainability in a fun and engaging way.
Additionally, Middleton is participating in the Charge Up Dane County initiative, which aims to expand public electric vehicle (EV) charging options. The sustainability coordinator encouraged local businesses, organizations, and the school district to apply for grants to establish accessible EV charging stations, particularly near multifamily housing.
The meeting also announced a paper shredding event on May 30 from 3 to 5 PM in the parking lot behind the library, providing residents with a secure way to dispose of sensitive documents. Furthermore, on June 19, a Sustainable U event will feature an EV show and tell, allowing residents to explore various electric vehicles.
These initiatives reflect Middleton's commitment to sustainability and community engagement, providing residents with opportunities to participate in environmentally friendly practices. As the city moves forward, these programs are expected to foster a more sustainable future for all residents.
