The Marion County School Board Work Session on May 22, 2025, highlighted the critical role of mentoring programs in fostering student success. With a focus on building supportive relationships, various initiatives were presented, showcasing the district's commitment to enhancing student well-being and academic achievement.
Ms. Harris, a key presenter, emphasized that mentoring goes beyond academic support, helping students develop self-confidence and navigate challenges both in and out of the classroom. "Mentoring is a structured, supportive relationship," she explained, underscoring its importance in providing students with trusted adults who guide them through their educational journeys.
One standout initiative is the Elevate Marion mentorship program, designed specifically for middle school students. Launched in November 2022, this program aims to address service gaps for students in grades 6 through 8. Ms. Harris shared that the program focuses on the whole child, integrating social and developmental needs into its framework. Early results show promising outcomes, with significant reductions in absenteeism and disciplinary issues among participants.
Another notable program, Dare to be Great, targets young girls in middle school, offering life skills training and community service opportunities. Program manager Davita Randolph highlighted the importance of building self-esteem and providing mentorship to help girls navigate the challenges of adolescence.
The SPARK mentoring program was also introduced, which is being piloted in 17 school sites. This curriculum-based initiative aims to build resilience and emotional regulation skills among students, further enhancing the district's mentoring efforts.
Community partnerships play a vital role in these mentoring initiatives. Organizations like Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Grama Education Foundation are actively involved, providing additional resources and support to students. These collaborations are crucial in expanding the reach and effectiveness of mentoring programs across Marion County.
As the meeting concluded, the board members expressed gratitude for the dedication of educators and community partners in supporting student success. The ongoing commitment to mentoring is expected to yield long-term benefits, helping students thrive academically and personally as they prepare for their futures.
