Durham County officials are pushing for critical enhancements to public safety resources during the recent Budget Work Session held on May 22, 2025. Sheriff Birkhead highlighted the urgent need for five additional deputies specifically for the Research Triangle Park (RTP) area, citing current manpower limitations that hinder effective law enforcement.

The discussion also spotlighted the dire condition of the county's kitchen facilities, which are reportedly in disrepair, forcing staff to serve cold meals. Sheriff Birkhead emphasized the necessity of upgrading kitchen equipment to meet the standards required for serving three meals a day to a vulnerable population, including some of the most violent offenders in custody.

In addition to staffing and kitchen upgrades, the Sheriff’s office is seeking funding for protective stab-resistant vests for detention officers, as they frequently encounter weapons within the facility. As the Sheriff's office prepares for an influx of new recruits from upcoming law enforcement and detention academies, there is a pressing need for new uniforms and protective gear. Sheriff Birkhead noted that while they strive to recycle existing uniforms, the diverse body types of officers necessitate new fittings.
