Fresno City Council is on track to regain its "pro housing" designation, a crucial status for advancing affordable housing initiatives, as discussions at the May 22 meeting highlighted significant progress toward meeting state criteria. Out of 33 criteria set by the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD), 26 have been met, with plans to address the remaining seven by June.

Council Member Perea introduced a text amendment aimed at permitting residential uses in office zones and allowing tiny houses on wheels as primary residences. These changes are part of a broader strategy to streamline the permitting process for various housing types, including duplexes and fourplexes, which are essential for addressing the city's housing shortage.

Mayor Jerry Dyer expressed optimism about meeting the remaining criteria, indicating that five of the seven outstanding items would be presented for approval soon, with the last two expected by fall. He emphasized the importance of this designation for Fresno's efforts to tackle homelessness and provide affordable housing, noting that the city has successfully transitioned over 10,000 unsheltered individuals into permanent housing over the past four years.

The council also discussed the need for transparency regarding the point system associated with the criteria, as not all items carry equal weight. This clarification is vital for understanding how the city can achieve the necessary points to maintain its designation.

In addition to housing discussions, the meeting included updates on various city projects and the introduction of new Economic Development Director Cliff Long, who will be reaching out to council members for collaboration.
