The Resilient Tennessee Collaborative Statewide Summit 2025, hosted by the Commission on Children and Youth, highlighted significant community initiatives aimed at empowering youth and fostering inclusivity. One of the standout programs discussed was the Alpha Esquires, a partnership between the Omicron Sigma Lambda fraternity and the Murfreesboro Park District. This initiative focuses on mentoring young men by equipping them with essential life skills, such as changing a tire, and preparing them for future educational opportunities.
The program meets monthly at the Patterson Park Community Center, where participants engage in hands-on activities and discussions that extend beyond academic readiness. Starting next fall, the initiative will introduce a parent component, allowing families to engage in the same topics as their children, fostering dialogue and community support.
Dr. McKinney, a representative of the fraternity, emphasized the importance of collaboration with local organizations, particularly the Divine Nine (D9) fraternities and sororities, which have a long-standing history of community service. He urged local and state agencies to leverage existing infrastructures within these organizations to enhance their outreach and impact. The D9 organizations not only provide mentorship but also offer scholarships, with over $5,000 awarded last year alone, demonstrating their commitment to supporting youth as they transition through high school.
In addition to the Alpha Esquires, the summit featured discussions on the Carroll County Inclusion Park, which aims to create accessible recreational spaces for children with disabilities. Lori Dillahoney, the head chair for the park, shared her personal journey that led to the initiative, highlighting the community's response to the need for inclusive playground equipment. Fundraising efforts, including bake sales, have successfully raised over $11,000, showcasing the community's dedication to creating an inclusive environment for all children.
The summit concluded with a call to action for attendees to engage with local D9 organizations and explore collaborative opportunities. By tapping into established networks and resources, community leaders can amplify their efforts to support youth and foster inclusivity, ensuring that all children have access to the resources they need to thrive. The discussions at the summit underscored the importance of community involvement and the potential for lasting impact through partnership and shared purpose.
