Kings County Board approves library remodel and roadway improvements funding

During the Kings County Board of Supervisors meeting held on May 20, 2025, significant discussions centered around two major infrastructure projects: the remodel of the Hanford and Lemoore Libraries and the Avenal Cutoff Roadway Improvements.

The meeting commenced with a presentation by Mitchell Cabrera, chief engineer of the Public Works Department, who sought approval for the library remodel project. This initiative is backed by successful grant applications from late 2022, which secured approximately $8 million for the Hanford Library and around $4.7 million for the Lemoore Library. The funding aims to enhance the existing infrastructure and modernize both library branches. Cabrera noted that the project would include both essential safety upgrades and cosmetic improvements to create a more inviting atmosphere for patrons.

A key aspect of the discussion involved the logistics of the project, including a planned six-week advertising period for contractors and a mandatory site visit to ensure competitive bidding. Notably, the board addressed concerns regarding potential delays due to recent personnel issues within the library's management. Cabrera reassured attendees that the project would proceed as planned, with alternative staff in place to oversee construction.

Following the library discussion, Cabrera presented the Avenal Cutoff Roadway Improvements Project, which is set to continue the work initiated in phase one. This phase will cover an additional 4.7 miles of roadway, with a total budget of $4.6 million funded through SB 1 resources, ensuring no impact on the general fund. The project aims to improve a critical transportation route, which has been in disrepair, and is expected to take approximately three months to complete.

Both projects reflect the county's commitment to enhancing community infrastructure and services. The board unanimously approved both initiatives, signaling a proactive approach to addressing the needs of Kings County residents. As these projects move forward, they are anticipated to not only improve local facilities but also support economic growth and accessibility in the region.
