Mayor Hernandez and city officials celebrate Earth Day with tree planting and community art

The Keep Pharr Beautiful meeting held on May 20, 2025, focused on various community initiatives aimed at enhancing local environmental awareness and beautification efforts. The meeting began with discussions about the successful implementation of seed packets, including native and vegetable seeds, which were distributed to community members. A resident artist contributed to the beautification project by creating origami and a seasonal mural, which will be updated throughout the year.

Participants discussed plans for future events, particularly a potential gathering in September to promote seasonal vegetable planting. This event aims to encourage community engagement and awareness about gardening and sustainability.

The meeting also highlighted a recent tabling event for Earth Day, where public health representatives distributed pollinator seed packets, and local students participated in activities such as archery. A food bank truck provided fresh produce, including avocados and greens, to families in attendance.

Additionally, the Earth Day Arbor Day celebration was noted for its strong turnout, featuring numerous exhibitors and vendors. Participants engaged in a community painting project, with around 30 individuals registering and 14 to 16 actively painting. The event emphasized the theme "Our Power, Our Planet," showcasing the community's creativity and commitment to environmental stewardship.

The meeting concluded with a tree planting demonstration and a native tree seedling giveaway, supported by the National Wildlife Federation. The city received reimbursement for the seedlings purchased, furthering its commitment to enhancing green spaces in Pharr.
