The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) is set to continue its impactful Help Feed Hungry Texans program, with a recommendation to designate Feeding Texas as the nonprofit organization responsible for its administration. This decision, presented during the commission's work session on May 21, 2025, will be considered for adoption at the upcoming meeting.
Established in 2015, the Help Feed Hungry Texans program allows hunters purchasing licenses to voluntarily contribute funds to support local food assistance efforts. Contributions can be made in increments of $1.05, $10, or $20, and since its inception, the program has facilitated over $1.5 million in donations, resulting in the distribution of more than 773,000 pounds of venison to feed over half a million Texans in need.
Feeding Texas, which has been the designated nonprofit since the program's launch, operates the well-known Hunters for the Hungry initiative and boasts a robust network of 20 food banks across the state. The organization is recognized for its strong fiscal controls and extensive experience in hunger relief, making it a fitting choice for the program's continued administration.
The current contract with Feeding Texas is set to expire on August 14, 2025, prompting the need for this recommendation. Public support for the designation has been strong, with all five public comments received in favor of continuing the partnership with Feeding Texas.
The program not only provides a means for hunters to donate legally harvested deer but also ensures that the processing of these donations is free for hunters, as the food banks cover the costs. This streamlined process allows for efficient distribution of venison to local food banks, enhancing food security for many Texans.
As the commission prepares to finalize this designation, the continuation of the Help Feed Hungry Texans program promises to further strengthen community support and address hunger across the state. The upcoming meeting will provide an opportunity for public comment and action on this vital initiative.
