The South Huntington Union Free School District Board of Education meeting held on May 20, 2025, celebrated the achievements of outstanding students through the presentation of the Michael S. Curtin Awards. This annual event recognizes students for their hard work, leadership, and contributions to their school and community.

Several students were honored during the meeting, each nominated by their teachers for their exceptional qualities and accomplishments. Aliyah, nominated by Mr. Bearline, was praised for her diligence and commitment, balancing her studies with work at Old Navy and Harbor Mist. She plans to attend LIU Post in the fall.

Jana Azakari, nominated by Ms. Dooley and Mr. Raul Amos, was recognized for her active role in the Muslim Students Association and her efforts to share her culture. She will continue her education at Farmingdale State College.

Tyler Francisco, nominated by Mr. Schmidt, was commended for his growth and positive contributions during his time at Walt Whitman. He is set to pursue a major in criminal justice at Farmingdale State College.

Matthew D'Orisio, another award recipient, was noted for his leadership as a two-sport captain in football and wrestling, as well as his volunteer work running the school store. He plans to attend SUNY Maritime.

Zachary Glucksville, nominated by Ms. Wong, was highlighted for his responsibility and support for classmates, with future plans to study at the University of Alabama.

Daniel Gross, nominated by Ms. Moss and Mr. Schmidt, was recognized for his teamwork and dedication, with plans to attend St. John's University.

Christian Eteriano Monje, nominated by Ms. Hanovich, was acknowledged for his contributions to the fine and performing arts and his academic diligence. He aims to attend Suffolk County Community College and later transfer to Stony Brook University.

The meeting concluded with a celebration of these students' achievements, emphasizing the importance of hard work, community involvement, and academic success. The awards serve not only as recognition but also as inspiration for other students within the district.
