Mercedes ISD is taking significant steps to enhance educational opportunities and safety for its students, as highlighted in the recent Regular Board Meeting held on May 20, 2025. The board approved several initiatives aimed at improving career readiness and student well-being, alongside measures to bolster campus security.

One of the standout decisions was the approval of a 10-day externship program in collaboration with Noble Texas Builders and the Noble Leadership Academy. This initiative will allow two teachers and up to four students to gain hands-on experience in various fields, including construction, healthcare, business finance, and law enforcement. Students participating in the program will earn $12 per hour, while teachers will receive $30 per hour. This externship is designed to facilitate a smoother transition from high school to the workforce, ensuring that educators are well-versed in current industry practices and technologies.

In addition to the externship, the board approved the implementation of innovative Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses for the 2025-2026 school year. New classes in marketing and sales, as well as retail management, will be introduced, aligning with local job opportunities at the nearby outlet mall. This expansion aims to equip students with essential skills for future employment.

The board also discussed the approval of social-emotional learning (SEL) camps for students and professional development workshops for teachers. These initiatives are intended to foster positive learning environments and improve student outcomes by addressing behavioral issues and enhancing social skills.

On the safety front, the board approved the purchase of an access control system for Mercedes High School, funded through a Safe Grant. This system will allow for better monitoring of entry points, reducing the need for multiple security personnel to manage door access. The implementation of this technology is expected to enhance campus safety significantly.

Furthermore, the board approved the renewal of instructional materials and technology upgrades, including the purchase of 230 new iPads for kindergarten classrooms, ensuring that students have access to modern educational tools.
