Mercedes ISD celebrated a successful athletic year during its recent board meeting, highlighting the achievements of student-athletes across various sports. The meeting, led by Junior Athletic Director Roger Adame, showcased the accomplishments of track, golf, and softball teams, emphasizing the dedication and hard work of the young athletes.
The Lady Tiger track team, under Coach Judy Gutierrez, excelled at the district level, finishing second in the 32-5A district track meet. Several athletes qualified for regional competitions, with standout performances from Isabella Parker, who was recognized as the Valley's best high jumper, and Kenzie Rodriguez, who also earned a track MVP award. The boys' track team, coached by Andy Mata, saw multiple athletes qualify for area meets, including Robert Sanchez and Diego Bravo in the 4x200 meter relay.
In golf, the girls' team secured second place in their district, with individual accolades going to Alexander Garza, who was named Golf MVP and recognized for her academic achievements. The team also included several regional qualifiers, showcasing the depth of talent within the program.
Softball teams also received commendations, with the varsity squad achieving a strong district record of 14 wins and 4 losses, earning the title of Division 2 by-district champions and area finalists. The junior varsity team also shone brightly, finishing as district champions with an impressive record of 16 wins and 1 tie.
The meeting concluded with a heartfelt acknowledgment of the support from parents, coaches, and the school administration, reinforcing the community's role in fostering athletic excellence.
