Palatka residents are one step closer to enjoying a new splash pad at the riverfront, following a recent city commission meeting where survey results highlighted strong community interest. Kristen Odom, the Community Resource and Engagement (CRE) coordinator, presented findings from a two-week survey that garnered 795 responses. Nearly 70% of participants expressed interest in the splash pad, with 47.5% indicating they would use it frequently.
The survey also revealed key features that residents desire, including shaded seating areas, water play features for all ages, and safety measures. These insights will guide further analysis on the feasibility and design of the project.
However, the proposal is not without concerns. Residents voiced apprehensions regarding homelessness in the area, maintenance of the facility, and safety for children due to traffic. City officials noted that similar projects in other cities have not faced significant issues with homelessness and emphasized the importance of regular maintenance to ensure safety and cleanliness.
The estimated annual maintenance cost for the splash pad is around $6,400, with water usage projected at approximately $100 per day during the nine-month operational period. City officials are exploring options for water sourcing to manage costs effectively.
As the city moves forward with this initiative, the commission will continue to engage with the community to address concerns and refine the project. The splash pad represents a potential enhancement to local recreational offerings, aiming to foster community engagement and enjoyment.
