A significant step towards enhancing public transportation accessibility in Austin was taken during the CapMetro board meeting on May 23, 2025. The board unanimously approved a resolution to apply for a grant from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) aimed at improving ADA compliance at bus stops across the city.
The proposed project, part of the CapMetro ADA Transition Plan, has a total cost of $6.9 million, with CapMetro committing to a local match of approximately $1.4 million, or 20% of the total project cost. This funding will support the construction of 87 ADA-compliant transit stops and the installation of amenities at 17 locations, significantly enhancing safety and mobility for individuals with disabilities.
Sharmila Mukherjee, CapMetro's Chief Planning and Development Officer, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating it reflects community needs and aims to improve overall customer experience. The project aligns with CapMetro's long-term goals of creating a more accessible and inclusive transit system.
In addition to the ADA improvements, the board also approved a resolution to procure 75 Dodge ProMaster vans for a total of nearly $6 million. These vehicles will enhance CapMetro's service capabilities and are designed to be wheelchair accessible, further supporting the agency's commitment to equitable transportation.
The board's decisions mark a pivotal moment in Austin's efforts to create a more inclusive public transportation system, ensuring that all community members can navigate the city with greater ease and safety.
