In a heartfelt tribute during the California State Assembly session on May 23, 2025, members honored the lives of two remarkable individuals: Karen Ann Darling and Dr. Leonardo Pandak, known affectionately as Tito Leo.
Assemblymember Pellerin led the remembrance for Karen Darling, who passed away on April 8. Celebrated for her unwavering commitment to justice and community service, Karen's life was marked by love, resilience, and advocacy. She was a dedicated poll worker and a fierce supporter of democratic values, women's rights, and the empowerment of marginalized voices. Her legacy includes a lifetime of service, a loving family, and a spirit that inspires others to engage in their communities. Pellerin urged members to honor her memory through action, encouraging them to write letters and fight for justice, embodying the curiosity and kindness that defined Karen's life.
Following this tribute, Assemblymember Colosa remembered Dr. Leonardo Pandak, a visionary leader in the Filipino and Asian American communities. Born in the Philippines, Dr. Pandak dedicated his life to agriculture, human services, and community advocacy. He held a PhD in human services and served in various leadership roles, including as president of the Pacific Asian Alcohol and Drug Program. His contributions extended to numerous organizations, including the Filipino American Network Advocacy Organization and the Rotary Club of Historic Filipino Town. Colosa emphasized the importance of continuing Dr. Pandak's legacy of service and community upliftment.
As the Assembly observed a moment of silence for both individuals, the tributes highlighted the profound impact of their lives and the call to action for all to continue their work in service of others.
