Northern Pike fishing is on the rise in Nebraska's Northeast District, with officials reporting promising developments at several local lakes. During the recent Nebraska Northeast District Fisheries Meeting, fisheries experts highlighted the successful natural reproduction of Northern Pike at Grove Lake, where anglers can expect to catch fish in the 20 to 30-inch range, with some reaching 30 inches or larger.
The meeting also spotlighted Peterson Lake in the Sand Hill region, which was sampled just last week and showed similar positive results in size structure. Additionally, Goose Lake in Holt County has seen significant improvements thanks to ongoing efforts by Game and Parks to manage the fishery. After a complete renovation in 2022 to eliminate invasive common carp, Northern Pike populations are rebounding, indicating a healthier ecosystem.
However, challenges remain. Water levels at Swan and Goose Lakes were reported low at the end of the 2024 season and may continue to be low as the 2025 fishing season approaches. This could lead to increased vegetation, which may affect fishing conditions. Anglers are encouraged to plan their trips accordingly and report any excessive weed growth at boat ramps to help fisheries officials manage the situation effectively.
As the fishing season unfolds, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is committed to maintaining these fisheries and ensuring a thriving environment for both fish and anglers alike.
