The Town of Mansfield's Select Board has approved significant rate increases for water and sewer services, aiming to maintain financial stability and infrastructure improvements. During the meeting on May 21, 2025, the board voted for a 6% increase in water rates and a 4% increase in sewer rates, effective immediately.
The decision comes as part of an annual review process designed to prevent sudden spikes in utility costs, a strategy that has proven effective compared to neighboring communities facing much larger increases. For instance, Attleboro is proposing an 18% hike in water rates and a 10% increase for sewer services.

Dave Fox, vice president of Raftelis, a firm specializing in utility financial matters, praised Mansfield's proactive approach to managing its water and sewer funds. He emphasized that the town's financial planning includes a five-year forecast to ensure sustainability and to address the challenges posed by aging infrastructure and declining water consumption.
The approved rate increases are expected to support ongoing capital projects and maintain reserve funds, which are crucial for financial flexibility in the face of unexpected expenses.
