Old Town North residents protest rise of short-term rentals and community disruption

Residents of Fort Collins are raising urgent concerns about the growing number of short-term rentals (STRs) in their neighborhoods, citing safety issues and a loss of community. During a recent City Planning and Zoning Commission meeting, several homeowners from Pascal Street voiced their frustrations over the disruptive impact of STRs on their once-close-knit community.

One resident described the scene of a rental property preparing for a party, highlighting the influx of unfamiliar faces and the noise that accompanies such gatherings. "We're getting outnumbered," they stated, urging city officials to witness the weekend chaos firsthand. This sentiment was echoed by others who reported feeling unsafe and disconnected from their neighbors due to the transient nature of STR occupants.

Jackie Kinnick, a long-time resident and educator, expressed her dismay over the decline of community spirit since STRs became prevalent in the area. Kinnick emphasized the importance of community ties, stating, "My street is my community. My neighbors are my friends."

"We are outnumbered," she said, calling for a halt to new STR licenses and a reevaluation of existing ones.

Debbie Kennison, a resident who witnessed this event, raised concerns about whether the individual was connected to one of the nearby STRs, further underscoring the safety risks associated with the current STR landscape.
