New Bedford EMS Director Thomas outlines challenges and future for medical services

The New Bedford Quasi Committee of the Whole convened on May 21, 2025, to discuss the budget for the upcoming fiscal year, focusing on various departments, including emergency medical services (EMS). Director Michael Thomas presented an overview of the challenges faced by New Bedford EMS during fiscal year 2025, highlighting significant financial constraints that have impacted service delivery.

Thomas noted that budget cuts, rising supply costs, and ongoing supply chain disruptions have hindered the department's ability to maintain its usual level of service. Despite these obstacles, New Bedford EMS responded to over 23,000 calls in 2024, demonstrating a commitment to providing critical care under difficult circumstances.

Looking ahead to fiscal year 2026, Thomas expressed cautious optimism but acknowledged that many challenges would continue. He pointed out that ambulances ordered in fiscal year 2024 had yet to be delivered, and medical supply shortages had led to increased equipment costs. Additionally, medical emergencies had risen by 10 percent in fiscal year 2025, underscoring the need for more ambulances on the road. However, due to budget cuts, the department was unable to fill one of its impact trucks.

Despite these challenges, Thomas reported progress in staffing efforts, particularly through the EMT training academy, which has completed its third class. This initiative aims to create a sustainable pipeline of qualified providers for the future. Several new hires have already met state requirements and are contributing to the department's mission.

The meeting underscored the ongoing financial and operational challenges faced by New Bedford EMS, while also highlighting the department's dedication to maintaining high standards of care amidst adversity. The discussions set the stage for future budget considerations and potential improvements in service delivery as the city moves into the next fiscal year.
