Redding Electric Utility updates wildfire mitigation plan with new strategies and technologies

Redding Electric Utility (REU) is taking significant steps to enhance wildfire safety and resilience in the community, as outlined during the Redding City Council meeting on May 20, 2025. The utility's annual update on its Wildfire Mitigation Plan highlighted key actions and improvements made over the past year, driven by the requirements of Senate Bill 901.

The plan, which has been presented annually since 2019, focuses on four main components: a ten-year capital improvement program, a wildfire prevention and improved response program, an emergency operations program, and technology solutions for better situational awareness. These initiatives aim to minimize fire ignitions, enhance system resilience, and ensure effective emergency responses.

In 2024, REU made notable progress, including the clearing of 167 acres of vegetation using goats in hard-to-reach areas, and inspecting over 800 acres of power line right-of-way. The utility also collaborated with city departments on a community wildfire protection plan, continued wrapping utility poles for fire protection, and implemented system hardening measures.

The Emergency Operations Program was activated five times in 2024 due to red flag warnings, ensuring that REU is prepared for potential emergencies. The utility is also focused on improving its technology to enhance operational efficiency and response capabilities.

As REU prepares for the 2026 Wildfire Mitigation Plan, the emphasis remains on community safety and proactive measures to protect residents from wildfire threats. The ongoing commitment to vegetation management and system improvements reflects a strong dedication to safeguarding the Redding community against the increasing risks of wildfires.
