South Padre Island's Parks and Keep SPI Beautiful Committee is ramping up efforts to enhance local parks ahead of the busy Memorial Day weekend. Key updates from the May 21 meeting highlighted ongoing maintenance and improvement projects across the island's green spaces.

The committee reported the successful replacement of a non-functioning water fountain at Water Tower Park, ensuring visitors have access to fresh water. Additionally, work is underway at Turtle Park, where drip irrigation systems are being installed to support new plantings. The team is also focused on amending soil in the butterfly garden to promote healthier growth.

Exciting developments are also in the works for the skate park located beneath the basketball courts at John L. Tompkins Park. Electrical work has begun to install lighting, which will enhance the area for evening events and activities, including skate days. This upgrade will also provide power outlets for music and other amenities during gatherings.

In addition to park updates, the committee recognized the Yard Landscape of the Month for May, awarding the honor to 105 East Lantana and the Palms Cafe for their outstanding landscaping efforts.
