Houston officials are sounding the alarm on a critical need for lifeguards as summer approaches, emphasizing that city pools will remain closed without sufficient staffing. During the Fiscal Year 2026 Budget Town Hall on May 17, 2025, a city representative urged community members to consider applying for lifeguard positions, highlighting the decent wages and bonuses for completing shifts.
"We want all the pools to open in the district, but they will not open unless we have lifeguards," the representative stated, stressing the importance of these roles for providing summer recreational opportunities for children. A table with information and QR codes was set up for interested applicants at the event.
In addition to the lifeguard appeal, the town hall served as a platform for residents to engage in upcoming budget workshops scheduled for the following week. Attendees were encouraged to participate by watching the sessions on HTV and submitting questions or comments via email. The workshops aim to gather public input to refine the city’s budget and consider potential amendments based on community feedback.
The call for lifeguards and the invitation to engage in the budget process reflect the city’s commitment to enhancing public services and ensuring that residents have access to safe recreational facilities this summer.
