Ashe County residents will soon benefit from enhanced vocational services as Wilkes Vocational Services prepares to celebrate its 60th anniversary in April 2026. During a recent county commission meeting, President Christie Berry outlined the organization's commitment to providing essential support for individuals with mental and physical challenges.
Wilkes Vocational Services, a private nonprofit established in 1966, operates through community resources and subcontract work. Berry highlighted the range of services offered, including supported employment, vocational training, and personal development programs tailored to individual needs. The organization serves not only Wilkes County but also surrounding areas, including Ashe, Allegheny, Yadkin, and Surrey.
In addition to vocational training, Wilkes Vocational Services provides in-house job opportunities in areas such as housekeeping, paper shredding, woodworking, and professional framing. Berry emphasized the importance of these programs in helping individuals achieve greater self-sufficiency and independence.
