Del Norte County officials are taking significant steps to address the urgent need for jail rehabilitation funding during the Measure R Oversight Advisory Committee meeting held on May 16, 2025. The committee discussed prioritizing Measure R funds to help close a $5 million funding gap for the jail rehabilitation project, which has an estimated total cost of $10 million.
Currently, the project has secured $5 million from various sources, including $3 million from federal funding and $1.5 million from realignment funding. However, the county is still seeking additional support to fully finance the project. Officials have been actively engaging with state legislators to secure further funding, emphasizing the project’s importance for public safety and community welfare.
The committee highlighted that having local funds available for capital improvements would help avoid additional debt for the county. This approach aligns with community feedback, which has shown strong support for using Measure R funds for infrastructure projects that enhance public safety.
In addition to the jail rehabilitation discussion, the committee also approved a motion for the purchase of two new vehicles for the Sheriff’s Department, along with new flooring for the facility. The total cost for the vehicles was noted to be $149,850, which raised questions about discrepancies in the budget breakdown, but the motion passed unanimously.
As the project moves forward, officials are optimistic that the increased readiness and detailed planning will elevate the county’s position in securing state funding. The ongoing discussions reflect a commitment to improving local infrastructure and ensuring the safety of the community. The next steps will involve continued advocacy for state support and careful management of the allocated Measure R funds to maximize their impact on public safety initiatives.
