Nueces County proclaims May as Foster Care Awareness Month to support local children

The Nueces County Commissioners Court held a significant meeting on May 14, 2025, where they proclaimed May as Foster Care Awareness Month, highlighting the urgent need for foster families in the community. The proclamation emphasized that every child deserves a safe and loving home, and it called upon residents to support foster parents who play a crucial role in caring for children who have experienced trauma.

During the meeting, Shannon Murphy from Agape Ranch addressed the court, sharing that there are currently over 400 children in foster care in Nueces County, but only 94 active foster homes available. This shortage often results in local children being placed in homes far from their community, which can exacerbate their emotional challenges. Murphy noted that the average age of a child entering foster care is around eight years old, and those ready for adoption often wait up to two years to find permanent homes.

The court also recognized the collaborative efforts of local nonprofits, including Agape Ranch, which focuses on prevention, foster care, adoption, and support for youth aging out of the system. Murphy highlighted recent initiatives, such as a successful adoption event that featured 45 children ready for adoption, and the development of new facilities at Agape Ranch, supported by grants for essential infrastructure.

In addition to foster care, the court proclaimed the week of May 16-22 as Search and Rescue Week, acknowledging the vital work of search and rescue professionals in the community. Dean Hawkins, the Emergency Operations Director, read the proclamation, which recognized the challenges faced by families of missing persons and the dedication of volunteers who assist in locating them.

The discussions during the meeting underscored the importance of community involvement in supporting vulnerable populations, particularly children in foster care and families affected by missing persons. The court encouraged residents to consider becoming foster parents or supporting local organizations that work tirelessly to improve the lives of those in need. As the meeting concluded, the commissioners expressed their gratitude to all who contribute to these essential services, reinforcing the message that community support is crucial for fostering a brighter future for children and families in Nueces County.
