Depot Bench Neighborhood Association voices safety concerns over Lato-Alpine development

Boise's Design Review Commission is taking significant steps to enhance pedestrian safety and community aesthetics in the Depot Bench neighborhood. During a recent meeting on May 12, 2025, the commission reviewed plans for a new development at the intersection of Lato and Alpine Streets, which aims to address longstanding safety concerns raised by local residents.

The proposed design includes raised planters along the sidewalk to create a buffer between pedestrians and traffic, significantly improving the walking environment. The design team emphasized their commitment to safety, particularly for children commuting to nearby Jefferson Elementary School. Features such as benches and varied landscaping are intended to make the area more inviting and functional for residents and visitors alike.

However, the Depot Bench Neighborhood Association voiced serious concerns regarding the development's impact on parking and safety. David Nibel Deschenes, a board member, highlighted the challenges posed by the busy intersection, including the proximity of railroad tracks and the absence of parking on one side of the street. These factors complicate the area, especially during school hours when pedestrian traffic increases.

The commission's discussions reflect a broader commitment to creating a safer and more accessible community.
