Commission explores options for new community enrichment facility in Athens

Athens-Clarke County officials are exploring new strategies for the development of community enrichment facilities following a stalled partnership with the Land Trust. During the Mayor and Commission Work Session on May 13, 2025, discussions centered on the future of a proposed facility aimed at enhancing youth services in the area.

The commission is considering three primary options for moving forward. The first option involves restarting the request for proposals (RFP) process to find a new partner and site for the facility. The third option focuses on constructing a half-court gym at Christine Howard Park, which could be completed in approximately two and a half years. This option is seen as a quicker solution, utilizing available funds effectively while meeting community demands for recreational facilities.

The discussions highlighted the importance of site selection, particularly in areas with high population density, to ensure accessibility for local youth.
