Bus driver and attendant hailed as heroes after school bus fire on Barker Drive

The Board of Education meeting held on May 13, 2025, began with a commendation for the heroic actions of staff involved in a recent bus fire incident. The meeting opened with a report from the transportation supervisor, Kathy Casella, detailing the events of April 22, when a special needs bus caught fire on Barker Drive.

Superintendent Dr. Scanlon recounted how the bus driver, Joe Trapani, and bus attendant, Juana Nunez, successfully evacuated the children from the bus, ensuring their safety and calm during the emergency. The bus was reported to be fully engulfed in flames by the time emergency responders arrived, with significant damage to the vehicle.

Dr. Scanlon expressed gratitude to Trapani and Nunez for their quick thinking and bravery, stating that their actions prevented what could have been a tragic situation. He also acknowledged the efforts of local firefighters, including Terry Keough, Jack Blount, and Tony Tucci, who assisted at the scene.

In recognition of their bravery, certificates of appreciation were presented to Trapani and Nunez, along with representatives from Suffolk Transportation. The meeting attendees were invited to take a group photo to commemorate the occasion, highlighting the community's support for the heroes involved.
