Newport News proclaims Emergency Medical Services and Public Works Weeks

The Newport News City Council meeting on May 8, 2025, highlighted several important proclamations and community recognitions. Mayor Philip Jones opened the session by proclaiming the week of May 18 to May 24 as Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week. This proclamation emphasized the critical role of EMS professionals who provide care around the clock, underscoring their commitment to the community with the theme "We Care for Everyone."

Following the EMS recognition, the council presented a proclamation for National Public Works Week, celebrating the contributions of public works professionals to community infrastructure and public health. This year marks the 65th annual observance, with the theme "People, Purpose, and Presence," acknowledging the essential services that enhance the quality of life in Newport News.

Additionally, the council recognized the winners of the 2025 Great American Cleanup Department Challenge. The Parks and Recreation Department was awarded the championship belt for their outstanding efforts, leading a team of over 250 volunteers who collected 918 bags of litter. The Finance Department was also honored as the small department winner, showcasing the collective commitment to a cleaner environment.

Before moving to public hearings, the council observed a moment of silence for City Manager Alan Archer, who was absent due to a family bereavement. The meeting concluded with a sense of community spirit and appreciation for the hard work of local departments and professionals.
