Egg Harbor Township residents may soon see the development of a community track, following a passionate proposal from local physical education teacher and alumnus, who emphasized the need for accessible running facilities during the recent Township Committee meeting on November 26, 2024.

The teacher, who graduated from Egg Harbor Township High School in 2009 and now teaches at Davenport Primary, highlighted the challenges faced by local youth in accessing the high school track, which is often locked and unavailable for community use. He pointed out that while there are other tracks in the area, they do not provide the same opportunities for local programs, particularly for the HD Run Club, which he has coached for a decade. This program aims to nurture young runners from fourth to eighth grade, preparing them for future competition at higher levels.

The proposal for a community track is rooted in the desire to enhance local recreational programs and provide a safe space for residents to walk and run. The teacher noted that having a dedicated track would not only benefit current students but also alumni returning home who wish to continue their training. He expressed disappointment over the lack of access to the high school track, which has become increasingly difficult to reserve since the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition to fostering athletic development, the proposed track could serve as a venue for community events, such as the Miller Mile competition for elementary students, further integrating the facility into local traditions and activities. The teacher's vision aims to create a welcoming environment that encourages physical activity among all age groups in Egg Harbor Township.
