The Hidalgo County Commissioner’s Court meeting on May 13, 2025, focused primarily on preparations for the upcoming hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30. Chief Sunlina presented two key initiatives aimed at enhancing community readiness for potential storms.
The first initiative declared May as Hurricane Awareness Week, during which the Hidalgo County Public Health Emergency Preparedness Program, in collaboration with emergency management, will release a series of informational videos. These videos will provide residents with practical steps to prepare for hurricanes and will be shared daily on the county's social media platforms. Chief Sunlina emphasized the importance of community collaboration in strengthening resilience against severe weather events.
The second initiative, titled "Hidalgo County Ready," will feature monthly emergency preparedness pop-up events across the county. These events aim to deliver vital information and resources directly to residents, covering topics such as hurricanes, flooding, wildfires, and extreme weather conditions. Attendees will have access to educational booths and presentations from local organizations, with the first 25 families at each event receiving free emergency kits.
In addition to hurricane preparedness, the court addressed various administrative matters, including the approval of memorandums of understanding with Texas A&M University regarding parking for veterans and the appointment of interns within the sheriff's office. The meeting concluded with discussions on personnel changes and the creation of temporary positions to assist with summer programs and hurricane preparedness efforts.
Overall, the meeting underscored Hidalgo County's proactive approach to emergency management and community safety as the region braces for the hurricane season. Residents are encouraged to prepare by gathering essential supplies and securing their homes ahead of potential storms.
